Today I thought it might be fun to display a finished painting and the sketch I made in preparation. Often, a preparatory drawing helps to organize your thoughts into a plastic form. The drawing is indeed a sketch, but I am pleased with the way the quick marks fall into place.
The theme, “Death and the Maiden”, is a common subject from medieval times; a warning against vanity and a reminder of the shortness of this life.

In the painting, I have reached a more defined image and have changed the poses somewhat. Although the hourglass is missing, I think that the way that Death now clutches his victim makes for a more dramatic relationship between the two.

I hope you find this interesting and will check in for my next post!
