This week we present a whimsical picture inspired by a book I haven’t actually read (though the story of Captain Ahab and his vengeful search for the great white whale seems to belong to popular culture).

Here we see a whaling ship in the distance and the dreaded Moby Dick gliding silently below. Although our whale looks a bit like a giant guppy he does have rather piranha-like teeth, and I like the way the boat’s reflection plunges dagger-like toward him. I find myself painting words into my pictures when they fit the composition or help to explain the image. Speaking of words, Moby Dick is one of the great masterpieces of American literature, and I should get around to reading it one day!
